After moving to Oregon in the early 1990s, the late Tom Peerbolt was introduced to the SW Washington berry community by a few long-standing berry growers (farmers) in the region. After a few years working with growers, he realized the importance of a strong berry community in the Pacific Northwest, and so his vision of connecting the berry industry began. In 2000, he created the Small Fruit Update which he faxed out to his regional network of growers and now reaches nearly 1,500 people industry wide!
With this shared network, growers get the necessary information needed to help protect their crops from different pests, know how and when to prepare for unfavorable weather, how to get the maximum yield from their crops, and immensely more!
Tom and his wife proceeded to build on the collaborative communication, technology, and on-farm research efforts to ensure applied results and farm connection were prioritized for years to come.
Their mission today is based on the original premise of fostering Pacific Northwest farm, research and market success by working together to solve problems and share insight/efforts throughout the region instead of working independently of each other. To promote a viable, science-based, and environmentally responsible Pacific Northwest berry industry through applied research and extension.
All ensuring that the berries you and your families receive at your local farmers market or grocery store or used in other products that reach your shelves are healthy and sourced with love.

Talk about working together to build a generous community of collaboration! From the Generous-City team to all of you at NBF, to the local farmers, to the researchers, scientists, and volunteers, we thank you for your continued service!
Graciously,
The Generous-City Team
