Xinran (or Maria) is an artist, writer, pediatric neurologist at OHSU, and mother. Her artwork channels the divine creative energy all around to connect us with the healing and transformative power of nature, and in turn, with that same force inside us. Her paintings and prints can be found at “Jam” on Hawthorne in Portland. Our question is, how does she do it all?!

So Maria, everything you do seems to stem from some form of Generosity or another. That said, what does generosity mean to you?
Maria:"The question I find myself asking these days is how can I be of service to my community? I became a physician because I wanted to help people, but I'm discovering serving my community means so much more than that. It means intentionally connecting with the abundance that is always available, of embodying, "I have enough (resources, time, energy, love); and I have enough to share."

Wow! This is exactly the premise behind what makes Generous-City what we are today and who we are striving to be! What was a moment of Generosity that greatly impacted you?
Maria: "When my family immigrated to this country when I was 11, one of her colleagues at the time arranged for enough donated furniture to furnish our new apartment. The furniture in my bedroom that went on to hold my most formative memories came from the generosity of others, and I am deeply inspired by this kind of powerfully invisible connection that binds us together."
That's beautiful! We can clearly see how that one moment of profound generosity has helped to shape the kind person you have become.

Maria, your story from your beginning, to the path you have chosen to permeate the importance of generosity in your everyday life, and of course to your striking works of art are such beautiful blessings to the world! Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
